Before I got married and had children, I had really few concerns and devoted nearly all of my days playing games or going to parties. Once I met ‘the one’ and settled down, children along with a mortgage soon followed along with weight gain and baldness. All of my work last to getting hitched were within the shopping business and never provided any vacation days or medical insurance. After getting hitched and having children, I desperately looked for a better job that offered these advantages but, due to the economy in shambles, I couldn’t find a job using these benefits. This caused us to ask, is medical insurance necessary?
Several months ago, my child Anne, had a tall temperature and the chills and was throwing up everything she ate or drank. Wearing a panic, my partner and I took her to the crisis area to see a doctor. When we checked in with the receptionist, she asked what insurance we had. I admitted that we didn’t have health insurance. She looked at me and rolled her eyes. I didn’t think anything of it during the time though. After waiting around for several hours, a nurse took her back to an examination room and checked her vital signs. After waiting around for another 2 hours, the doctor eventually showed up and spent all of five minutes with us to inform us that Anne needed some remainder and Tylenol. Wow, thanks. When we were going through the ‘discharge’ paperwork I was asked which medical insurance plan we had and I again responded nothing. Eventually, after signing a few forms, we moved home and, following a few days Anne started feeling better.
Then, many weeks later we received a bill through the mail for $1800! This had to be a mistake, appropriate? After investing my entire day in the phone contacting numerous offices at the hospital, I realized that, since we didn’t have any health insurance, that we actually had to pay this bill! There went our savings account.
Later that night I devoted a couple of hours looking online and found many wellness insurance companies that provided fairly inexpensive rates to pay for me and my family. After selecting a plan that fit our needs, I could get full coverage in a matter of days. Now, I no longer panic if any of us has ill. Happened to be covered.
